Greetings:
The Vac / Sick to PTO ordinance which was approved at the vote last week is being fine tuned by the lawyers to agree with the Maine Earned Paid Leave Law and the Federal Family Medical Leave law. The concept of the change and the calculation of time earned according to time worked is fine as approved.
Once the edits that complete the comingling of the three laws is complete, a Special Town Meeting needs to be held before enactment. That hopefully will occur next week or on the 30th.
In the interim. Some employes have time unspent and you need to decide how to handle that time. Lost, carry forward, partial..you call.
Of concern by a couple of the staff was - "How do I take time off in July or August if I haven't "earned" it. Simply put, the ordinance provides for negative accounting until tile worked earns it back. If an employee leaves before earning the time off, they owe such time monetarily.
So - back to the reason for this email. How do you want to handle time on the books unused as we cross into the 2026-2027 fiscal year?
Thanks,
Dick
