Hollis Conservation Commission 34 Town Farm Road Hollis, ME 04042 Hollis Conservation Commission [email protected] Hollis Conservation Commission Letter of Support Community Resiliency Grant – Waste Management Education Initiative The Hollis Conservation Commission is pleased to support efforts to strengthen community education and awareness around waste management and environmental stewardship. As the Commission continues its work developing an Open Space Plan through a Community Resiliency Grant, members have identified a strong opportunity to expand public education on the impacts of waste on our natural environment. Commission members are actively involved in community programs such as Earth Day celebration, nature walks, and environmental outreach. Through these efforts, the Commission seeks to educate residents about the effects of litter and improperly disposed waste on wildlife, plant life, water quality, and natural habitats. Educational topics will include the environmental impacts of common items such as plastic bottles, food packaging, balloons, and other materials frequently found in outdoor spaces. Emphasis will also be placed on the importance of the “Carry In, Carry Out” philosophy and the role individuals play in protecting natural resources. The Hollis Conservation Commission is committed to supporting community education through informational booths and outreach activities at events such as Hollis Community Day and other public gatherings. These efforts will help residents better understand the waste management process, including waste reduction, recycling, composting, and the importance of responsible disposal practices. In addition, the Commission regularly participates in roadside and community clean-up efforts and works collaboratively with residents of all ages, including Scouts, 4-H members, community organizations, and local businesses. Through these partnerships, the Commission promotes environmental responsibility and encourages active participation in keeping our community clean, healthy, and resilient. The Hollis Conservation Commission is proud to support initiatives that increase environmental awareness, reduce waste, and foster stewardship of our shared natural resources for current and future generations. Good morning Lee: I know that this is really a short time window. If you could put the letter on your letterhead and get it back to us by the 2nd of May that would be great. If you need any help with this, let me know. Add or delete anything that you would like. I have worked closely with Eco-Maine on a number of other projects in the past and this aligned with HCC's mission to keep our environment clean. As this progresses, let me know how I can help. -Lee On Wed, May 13, 2026 at 8:52 AM [email protected] < [email protected]> wrote: Good morning: I wanted to give you all information about our next Community Resiliency Grant. It is going to be working with ECO-Maine, SMPDC, and the community leaders (you) to increase public awareness and participation in the waste management program- recycling, composting, and trash. We are hoping that you all will participate in developing educational programs, I don't know what they call them- but a display of the waste management cycle, maybe some contests and encouragement of company participation in cleaning up the roads, etc. We plan on purchasing some recycling containers from Eco-Maine and have them help with educational displays and materials. Currently, I am working on letters for your endorsement if you are agreeable. Copies of the rough drafts of the letters of two letters of support are attached. Please feel free to ask questions. I thought that the Conservation Commission could be on what trash does to the environment- plants, animals, etc. I thought that the Recreation Department could have contests for making displays of the waste management cycle, trash sorting, and roadside trash exhibit. Of course, this is everyone's project so any other ideas are appreciated.
